Acute Viral Hepatitis A Infection in Adults-Complications and Outcomes

Background and Aim: To determine the clinical outcome complications encountered in adult patients with acute viral hepatitis A (AVH-A). Methods: This is a retrospective analysis of prospectively maintained database consecutive AVH- /or E. The study period was between 2017 2022. Adult (>18 years) symptoms laboratory investigations suggestive illness were included. Patients associated B C infections, negative serological tests for E, metabolic liver diseases, Wilsons disease, pre-existing chronic on failure (ACLF), drug induced injury incomplete reports excluded. Statistical used number, percentages, Mann Whitney test Chi square test. p-value <0.05 considered significant. Results: included 623 patients. Two hundred seven excluded based criteria. Of remaining 416 patients, 305 (73.3%) had AVH, 104(25%) AVH-A 7(1.7%) combined infection AVH A+E. Thus, one fourth adults due to AVH-A. cohort 104 median age 28 years (range 18-37 male preponderance (70, 67.3%). Eighty-five (81.7%) uneventful recovery. Nineteen cases hepatic extra-hepatic complications. Hepatic noted were- (2, 1.9%), prolonged cholestatic jaundice >12 weeks (9, 8.65%), relapsing 1.9%) autoimmune 1.9%). Extra-hepatic Guillian- Barre syndrome (1, 0.96%), mild pancreatitis glomerulonephritis 0.96%). Conclusion: accounts 25 % adults. It mainly affects young adults, four fifths have Prolonged cholestasis commonest complication, followed by hepatitis, failure. are rare favourable outcome.
